Luiza Folegatti holds a bachelor’s degree in Media Studies (2012) from the State University of Campinas (Brazil) and a master’s degree in Visual and Media Anthropology (2018) from the Freie Universität Berlin, completed with a scholarship for Fine Art, Design/Visual Communication, and Film from the Deutsche Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD). Her experience integrates artistic practice, teaching photography, and social advocacy work around the rights of immigrants. Her research interests include gender, migration, and Latin American studies and she is currently studying how ideas about identity evolve in the context of inter-generational experiences of migration. Her work draws on photography, video, performance, and visual anthropology methods and has been selected for the Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival (RAI) (UK, 2019), II Transforma (BR, 2019), Curta o Gênero (BR, 2018), German International Ethnographic Film Festival (GIEFF) (GER, 2018), Photoszene (GER, 2019), Düsseldorf Photo+ (GER, 2020), and F2 Fotofestival (GER, 2021), between others. From 2019 to 2021 she worked as a social worker for Xochicuicatl e.V. and Minor GmbH, focusing on immigrants in Berlin. She also designs and facilitates long-term photography workshops applying several collaborative methods for community organizing and is motivated by the positive impact generated by projects that combine photography, education, and community building. Originally from Brazil, Luiza is currently based in North Adams (USA).
