How can the perception of a brand be influenced by font design? Which emotions are perceived by typography? Bianca Berning presented examples from her daily work at Dalton Maag. Dalton Maag is famous for its font designs for companies like Nokia, BBC, the Olympic Games in Rio, and many more international and award-winning projects.

Brand building via font design

Bianca Berning showed important characteristics that are most significant for a typeface. As typeface design affects the image of a brand and the public perception of a product, It is of great importance for every company or institution.

After this short introduction about type design our students could become creative themselves. Berning gave them a few guidelines and then it was time to get started and design their own fonts. Whether playful, delicate or futuristic: in only ten minutes they’ve got to design one font the students created sketches that were surprisingly diverse.

Variable fonts: The future of typography?

How will typography develop in the future? In the end of her presentation and workshop Bianca Berning talked about possible tendencies like personalised fonts that adapt to individual requirements of the users of smartphones or other electronic devices. The immense innovations in modern technology in the last decades lead to enormous challenges also in the field of type design. We’re excited what is yet to come for the next generation of designers.
