Discussing menstruation in an exhibition

„Don’t hesitate – celebrate“ – The title of one of the works shown at Dilara Yilmaz‘ exhibition could have been the motto of the entire opening event on July 27. Many visitors came to make the Media University student’s exhibition dealing with menstruation a great success.

Only a few steps away from the Media University main building, where this term’s semester exhibition was taking place, Communication Design student Dilara Yilmaz celebrated the opening of her own exhibition in the Hundert Galerie, Media University’s show room. The exhibition was the final act of the „furchtbar fruchtbar“ (roughly translated: „bloody fertile“) communication campaign, which had been developed the weeks before in a semester project led by Prof. Felix Thomas. The task for his students was to develop a concept for a communication campaign dealing with a social or cultural topic. Dilara Yilmaz decided to focus on the topic of menstruation and its many socio-cultural and political dimensions.

The core of her campaign was the call for entries for an exhibition dealing with these aspects and the topic of menstruation itself. Many different works were submitted – photos and collages, as well as postcards, paintings, jewellery and readymade objects – and were presented in the exhibition, which opened on July 27. The opening event was a great success, also due to the numerous enthusiastic visitors. The campaign „furchtbar fruchtbar“ is supported by the organic tampon brand THE FEMALE COMPANY, and others, who contributed prizes for the participants, whose works were chosen by the vernissage audience. The winners of these prizes are Seyma Esma Özkan, Chani Garre, Lisann Lechtermann and Paula Sello.
