Background

Dr. Sebastian Köhler, M.A., Audiovisual Journalist (FH), has been working as a professor for Journalism and Publication at HMKW's Berlin campus since April 2010. He also works as a freelance TV Producer and Online Journalist, mainly in the Berlin newsroom of the news agency Reuters.

Sebastian teaches courses on the basics of journalism; TV-, radio- and online journalism; communication and media research; journalistic practice; mass media; narrativity and dramaturgy and convergence in journalism, amongst others, in the bachelor and masters programs at HMKW.

His research interests include problems of narrativity in journalism as well as problems of journalism and democracy.

"From contribution to contributing: According to George Orwell, journalism is the publication of something that important people do not want to be published – everything else is PR." I believe this is important and I see the future of journalism not in (the still quite elitist) journalism, but in a variety of journalisms: the very fast and the very slow, from completely convergent to single media, strictly information-based or entertainingly opinionated, from original pieces to professionally moderated offers written by users on relevant platforms. In short, good journalists are needed - we at HMKW want to contribute, together with our students!"
