Everything in motion: Virtual Motion & Design Conference at HMKW Berlin

An afternoon full of creative input from the world of motion design: This is what HMKW students were able to experience last Friday. At the virtual Motion & Design Conference, guests spoke about their practical experiences, their projects, and were open to answer any kind of questions.

At the beginning, HMKW alumni Lynn Huberty and Tobias Peil (both former B.A. Graphic Design and Visual Communication) gave first-hand accounts of their studies and current freelance projects. Huberty presented her bachelor project, the 3D animated short film "Shyāma", which has already successfully screened at countless short film festivals as well as being her ticket into the professional world of motion design.

Tobias Peil also presented his most important works to date and gave a very vivid account of his career entry, internships as well as his personal path to freelancing. How do I create a showreel that makes an impression on potential clients? And how do I set the course for a later career in motion design during my studies? In his presentation, Tobias Peil placed great emphasis on giving aspiring graphic and motion designers valuable tips and answering questions from the virtual audience.

Finally, the audience got a taste of Oscar air with the appearance of young filmmaker Shoko Hara. Her short film "Just a guy" is among the 96 films on the longlist for the 2021 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. How did this stirring and very intense film project come about and which challenges did she face? Director Shoko Hara revealed this and much more during the Q&A directly after the film screening and let the students take a look behind the scenes of an animated film in a very vivid way. Of course, we are now keeping our fingers crossed that her film wins at the Oscars. It certainly deserves it!

Last but not least, Ivan Flugelman from Sehsucht joined the virtual conference. The company is one of the most successful animation and motion graphics agencies in Germany. Under the motto "Design Driven Storytelling", Flugelman showed selected recent projects and demonstrated the great diversity of the agency's work. Be it work for the automotive or energy industry, campaigns for NGOs such as WWF or motion design clips for the games industry - there is never time for being bored in the field of motion design. In making-ofs, Flugelman went into detail about individual work steps and shared his extensive technical know-how with the audience.
